Surgery Residency

Description of the program

Medical residency training is one of the programs that trains for experts and talented professionals in the health sector. The surgery residency program will meet the needs of highly qualified scientific staff to serve people’s medical examination and treatment.

Currently, there are a small number of resident doctors teaching, studying and providing healthcare services in provinces. Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy is offering the residency program specialized in surgery to meet the current urgent requirements, making contribution to increasing the number of specialized doctors to serve the training of medical human resource, the provision of medical services for people in the northern mountainous region and throughout the country.

The training program consists of both theory and practice. The theory part is taught through presentation, discussion, and case study while the practice is done with the teaching methods such as bedside teaching method, discussion, and coaching at practical facilities.  Residents practice 24 hours at the practice hospital.

After graduating, resident doctors have ability to:

• Make a proper diagnosis and timely management of surgical emergency cases and common surgical diseases.

• Perform surgical procedures and surgeries.

• Be proficient in using professional equipment to serve diagnosis and treatment.

• Guide undergraduate students and become lecturers.

• Be able to organize and conduct scientific researches.

Admission requirements

Residents must graduate from a full-time training program of medicine with a good grade results or beyond within 06 months from the recognized graduation date.

Employment after completing the program

After graduating from surgery residency program, students may continue working in hospitals to become surgeons. Many can be appointed to be deputy director of a provincial hospital, or the department heads or the department deputy heads.

In addition, they may also have other job opportunities such as being a visiting lecturer or as a policy consultant in a hospital or for the government. After graduation, they may continue the next levels of study:  Doctor of Philosophy in surgery and Specialist II in surgery.
