ASSESSMENT OF SPERM SURVIVAL ABILITY IN MEN FROM INFERTILE COUPLES EXAMINED AT THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL
Overview
Abstract:
ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate sperm survival in men /infertile couples examined in
Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional
descriptive study was conducted to evaluate men from infertile couples examined
at Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Vietnam from
October 2022 to October 2024. Results: The viability and motility of the
samples after 24 h of incubation were 41.9±20.3% and 61.5±16.2%; sperm survival
test: sperm motility index (SMI) 24 hrs was 52.4±20.9% and sperm vitality index
(SVI) 24 hrs was 69.4±15.3 %. 58.7% of
samples had normal survival, and 41.3% had abnormal survival. Men's age in the abnormal SST group was
higher than in the normal group (36.7±3.5 vs 35.0±4.8, p = 0.01). Age was
negatively correlated with sperm survival: age with SMI 24 hrs (r=-0.24, p =
0.003). Sperm concentration in the normal SST group was higher than in the
abnormal SST group (45.3±26.3 vs 30.7±13.2, p < 0.001). Sperm concentration
was positively correlated with sperm survival: Sperm concentration with SMI 24 hrs
(r=0.51, p = 0.000). Progressive motility was higher in normal SST samples than
in abnormal samples (35.5±9.6 vs 33.3±9.8, p = 0.17). Progressive motility was
positively correlated with sperm survival: Progressive motility with SMI 24 hrs
(r=0.22, p = 0.008). Conclusions: Men in infertile couples exhibit a
high rate of abnormal sperm survival. Sperm survival ability is related to age,
sperm concentration, progressive motility, semen volume, and pH.
