Association Between Serum Lipid Profiles and Outcomes in Acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Abstract:

Objectives: To assess the association between admission lipid profiles and clinical outcomes in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage at Thai Nguyen National Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 117 patients with
acute intracerebral hemorrhage treated in the Department of Neurology, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. Results: Male patients accounted for the majority of cases (77.8%). The most common medical histories were hypertension (72.6%), dyslipidemia (25.6%), and alcohol abuse (17.1%). Mean serum triglyceride level was 2.72 ± 2.90 mmol/L; total cholesterol 4.80 ± 1.19 mmol/L; LDL-C 2.85 ± 0.88 mmol/L; and HDL-C 1.23 ± 0.42 mmol/L. There were no significant differences in mean lipid levels between male and female patients. LDL-C showed the highest prevalence of abnormality (59.8%). Triglyceride levels were significantly higher in patients with poor functional outcomes compared with those with good functional outcomes (p = 0.016). Total cholesterol and LDL-C levels tended to be higher
in the poor functional outcome group; however, the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). HDL-C levels were comparable between the two groups (p = 0.953). Conclusion: A high proportion of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage had at least one abnormal lipid parameter (81.2%), with LDL-C being the most frequently abnormal index (59.8%). Triglyceride levels were significantly higher in patients with poor functional outcomes than in those with good functional outcomes (p = 0.016). No statistically significant associations
were observed between total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C levels and functional outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (p > 0.05).
