Overview

Abstract:

Background: Among the non-pharmacological pain management techniques, music therapy is known as a technique that is easy to apply and safe for the patient. However, music therapy has not been widely used in clinical practice for postoperative pain management. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy on pain reduction among patiensts undergoing abdominal surgery at Thai Nguyen National Hospital in 2021. Methods: A randomized controlled trial study design was applied in this study. Simple random sampling technique was used to recruit 41 patients for each group to participate in the study. Results: In the intervention group, the mean pain score in bed rest was significantly lower in stages T1 and T2 than in the control group, at stage T3 there was no statistically significant difference in mean mean pain score between the two groups. The average pain score in shifting positions of patients in the intervention group was lower than in the control group in all 3 stages T1, T2 and T3. Conclusions: Music intervention are safe and easy to use in reducing pain levels among postoperetaive patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
