Faculty awareness and readiness for adopting artificial intelligence tools in teaching Basic Science courses at Thai Nguyen university of Medicine and Pharmacy

Abstract:

This study aimed to investigate faculty awareness, current practices, readiness, and perceived barriers to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching among faculty members of the Faculty of Basic Sciences, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted involving 37 faculty members using a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews. The survey assessed AI awareness, current use of AI in teaching, readiness to adopt AI, perceived benefits, and barriers to AI implementation. Descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential tests were performed, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Faculty members demonstrated a high level of AI awareness (4.00 ± 0.58) and a relatively high level of readiness to integrate AI into teaching (3.93 ± 0.49). AI tools were primarily used for lecture design, developing learning scenarios, and translating academic materials. The most highly perceived benefits included saving lesson preparation time, facilitating knowledge updates, and improving teaching quality. The main barriers to AI adoption were the lack of institutional guidelines on ethics and academic copyright, limited opportunities for AI practice, and insufficient institutional policies supporting AI implementation. Faculty members holding master's degrees showed significantly higher levels of AI awareness and readiness than those with doctoral degrees (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Faculty members showed positive attitudes toward AI and had begun integrating AI tools into their teaching activities. To promote broader and more effective AI adoption, universities should strengthen AI competency training, develop practical guidelines for AI use, and establish institutional support mechanisms for responsible AI integration in teaching.
