AND SOME CLINICAL AND
LABORATARYCHARACTERISTICS IN
CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE PATIENTS ON
HEMODIALYSIS AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL
HOSPITAL
Objective:Describe the clinical and subclinical
characteristics of patients with chronic kidney
disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) who have
hepatitis C virus infection and compare it with a
group of patients without hepatitis C virus.
Subject and method: A cross-sectional
descriptive study in patients with chronic kidney
disease on dialysis at Thai Nguyen Central
Hospital from July 2021 to July 31, 2022.
Result: There were 109 patients included 53
patients with hepatitis C virus infection. Mean
age: 54.98 ± 14.61; 58.5% of patients were
male; 51-to-60-year-old-patient group accounted
for the highest rate (34.0%). Average time of
dialysis: 6.15 ± 2.46 years; the highest rate was
found in the group of patients with dialysis time
from 5-7 years (39.6%). The most common
clinical symptom was fatigue (81.1%), and the
least common was hepatomegaly (9.4%). The
proportion of patients with HCV infection with
hypertension was 67.9%, higher than the group
of patients without HCV infection (50.0%). The
group of patients with viral load > 10
6 copies
accounted for the highest rate (34.0%). The rate
of HCV-infected patients requiring blood
transfusion was 81.1%, which higher than that in 
the non-HCV group (64.3%). The mean

creatinine of the group with HCV infection was
908.40 ± 268.52 µmol/l which higher than that in
the non-HCV group (862.58 ± 285.18 µmol/l).
The median AST and the median ALT were
28,80 UI/l and 21,70 UI/l respectively. 9.4% of
HCV-infected patients had cirrhotic liver
parenchyma, fatty liver parenchyma accounted
for 41.5%. HCV-infected patients had atrophic
kidney size, accounting for 86.8%.
Conclusion: The duration of hemodialysis and
blood transfusion was associated with HCV
positivity in patients with CKD on HD. The
significant association of AST, ALT, hepatobiliary
morphology and HCV infection contributes to the
approach of patients with CKD on HD.
