Overview

Abstract:

Objective: Adenomatous polyp is the most common type of polyp in the colorectal, with about 95% of colorectal cancers developing from adenomatous polyps. According to GLOBOCAN 2020, colorectal cancer has an incidence rate of 10%, ranking third among all cancer types and is second in mortality rate (9.4%). Understanding about risk factors for adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer will enhance awareness of early colorectal cancer screening for those with multiple risk factors, especially in asymptomatic individuals. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective study. Over 160 individuals, including 63 with adenomatous polyps and 15 with colorectal cancer. Results: We collected data from 160 asymptomatic patients. The prevalence of polyps, adenomatous polyps, serrated lesions, and colorectal cancer were 71/160 (44.4%), 63/160 (39.4%), 11/160 (6.9%) and 15/160 (9.3%). The prevalence of risk factors for adenomatous polyps in individuals aged ≥45, male gender, family history of polyps or colorectal cancer, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption were 56/63 (88.9%), 44/63 (69.8%), 15/63 (23.8%), 9/63 (14.3%), 13/63 (20.6%), 33/63 (52.4%), 22/63(34.9%). For colorectal cancer, the prevalence of risk factors in individuals aged ≥45, male gender, family history of polyps or colorectal cancer, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption were 15/15 (100%), 11/15 (73.3%), 4/15 (26.7%), 5/15 (33.3%), 5/15 (33.3%), 10/15 (66.7%), 7/15 (46.7%). The risk factors associated with adenomatous polyps were smoking, aged and while the risk factors linked to colorectal cancer were smoking and a family history of colorectal cancer. Conclusion: The prevalence of adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer in asymptomatic people is relatively high. Asymptomatic individuals with risk factors should be screened for colorectal cancer.
