Overview

Abstract:

ABSTRACT
RELATINSHIP BETWEEN SERUM CYSTATIN C AND
KIDNEY DAMAGE IN TYPE 2 DIABETES PATIENTS

Objective: Survey of serum cystatin C levels and Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) from serum cystatin
C in type 2 diabetic nephropathy. To examine the association between serum cystatin C levels, cystatin
C-based estimated GFR and serum creatinine levels and creatinine-based estimated GFR.
Subjects and methods: 88 patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy were clinically examined and
tested for serum creatinine, serum cystatin C, proteinuria, and microalbuminuria

Results: Serum cystatin C levels, cystatin C-based estimated GFR were strongly and signifcantly
correlated to serum creatinine levels and creatinine-based estimated GFR in diabetic nephropathy patients,
especially in patients with chronic renal failure. There was no signifcant correlation between the serum
cystatin C levels, cystatin C-based estimated GFR with serum creatinine levels and creatinine-based
estimated GFR in diabetic patients with creatinine-based estimated GFR ≥ 60, MAU (+). The rate of patients
with renal failure evaluated by cystatin C-based estimated GFR was higher than the rate of patients with
renal failure assessed by cystatin C-based estimated GFR.
Conclusion: Cystatin C can be considered as an indicator of kidney function in type 2 diabetic nephropathy
