Overview

Abstract:

Background: Flexible bronchoscopy is an increasingly utilized procedure for direct observation and intervention within the bronchial lumen. Objective: To describe and analyze the indications, outcomes, and complications of flexible bronchoscopy. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with a sample size of 385 patients who were purposefully selected based on bronchoscopy indications. Procedures included bronchoscopy, foreign body removal, lung lavage, pus drainage, transbronchial biopsy, and tissue biopsy. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The majority of patients were male (63.1%), with an average age of 61.32 ± 14.32. The most common symptoms leading to bronchoscopy were persistent cough (83.4%), suspected pulmonary tuberculosis (34.8%), abnormal chest X-ray findings (23.6%), suspected lung cancer (12.6%), and foreign body aspiration (1.03%). There was a strong association between suspected tuberculosis or lung cancer and positive AFB results or biopsy findings during bronchoscopy, with significant statistical relevance (p<0.01). Complications included nausea and vomiting (15.3%), post-procedure fever (14.28%), nasal bleeding (10.4%), and laryngotracheobronchial spasms (8.1%). Conclusion: Bronchoscopy is a crucial procedure for diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases, especially tuberculosis and lung cancer. Indications for bronchoscopy should be carefully considered based on the patient's clinical condition, weighing the potential benefits and risks. Recommendations: Careful monitoring and post-procedure care are essential to detect early complications.
