Abstract:

The study aimed to describe the status of knowledge, attitude and practice of oral health care in 402 first-year and fifth-year general students of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2019. Subjects and methods: 402 general students regular system 1st and 5th year studying at the Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy in the academic year 2018 - 2019 are investigated knowledge, attitude and practice of oral health care. Results: The percentage of good knowledge about oral care in the first year students accounted for 18.2%, the fifth year students accounted for 48.9%. Percentage of moderate knowledge about oral care in 1st  year students is 49.5%, and 5th  year students is 35.2%. The percentage of poor knowledge about oral care in 5th  year students accounted for 15.9%, lower than 1st  year students (32.3%). The percentage of students with good oral care attitude is quite high. In it, fifth year students accounted for 90.2%, higher than first year students (70.4%). The proportion of first year students with an average attitude (24.5%) is higher than that of fifth year students (8.3%). The percentage of students with poor attitude in the first year student is 5.1% higher than the fifth year student, which is 1.5%. More than 60% of students in the two study groups was only poor levels of  oral care practices. The average practice rate of oral care is similar in both groups (28.9% in 1st year students; 30.2% in 5th  year students). The rate of students with good level of oral care practices is very low (5.4% in 5th  year students and 3.9% in 1st  year students). Conclusion: Knowledge and practical skills about oral care of students is limited. Knowledge of tooth decay, gingivitis, tooth brushing methods, the role of fluoride, the effects of dental floss and time periodic oral exam of 5th  year students are better than 1st  year students. Students have good attitude about oral care: 70.4% in 1st  year; 5th  year is 90.2%. The percentage of students in 1st year never get  tartar teeth is quite high (54,7%). Over 60% of study subjects use the wrong or no floss.
